Questions
Everything people ask before the walkthrough
How long are my doors gone?
Doors and drawer fronts usually spend five to seven working days in our shop, and a whole kitchen takes one to two weeks from the day we start. Your written scope gives a range for your job, never a promised date.
Can I use my kitchen while you work?
Mostly. The boxes are finished in your kitchen, so on those days we ask you to stay out of the cabinets and the room's dust zone. Most households keep a working sink and refrigerator. We plan the days with you before we start.
What finish do you use, and how does it wear?
A cabinet-grade primer and two coats of a hard-wearing enamel, sprayed in the shop for doors and drawer fronts. Edges, hinges and the spot by the dishwasher are where any painted cabinet wears first. Ask for the product data sheet and we'll send it before you decide.
Will my oak grain show through the paint?
It can, and that's your choice. We can fill the grain so doors read smooth and modern, or leave it so the texture shows. We paint a sample board so you can see both before we commit.
Can you paint thermofoil or laminate cabinets?
Sometimes. Thermofoil that is peeling or bubbling usually can't hold paint, and we'll say so at the walkthrough instead of taking the job. In that case replacing the doors is the honest answer.
What is on your written estimate?
The number of doors, drawer fronts and boxes, the repairs, the primer and finish with sheen, the colors, the hardware plan, the schedule, the payment schedule and the warranty. If a line isn't there, it isn't included.
What costs extra?
Repairs found after the doors come off, water-damaged boxes, a second color inside the cabinets, new hardware and any change to the layout. We tell you which of these we see at the walkthrough.
My house was built before 1978. Does that change anything?
Yes. Federal rules from the EPA apply to paid work that disturbs paint in homes and child-occupied buildings built before 1978. The firm must hold the EPA's firm certification and follow its work practices. Our firm number is in the footer and on the About page, and you can ask to see it before work starts.
Who buys the paint, and which brand?
We do. The estimate names the primer and finish in plain words, and the data sheets are yours to read. We don't print brand names in our copy, but we'll tell you what we're using.
How do the deposit and payments work?
Your written estimate lists the deposit and the payment schedule. Nothing is due that isn't on it.
What does the warranty cover?
What it covers, for how long and what voids it are in your written warranty. Terms, limits and exclusions are in that document, so read it before you sign.
What happens to my hinges and pulls?
We remove them, label every door and bag the hardware by cabinet so it goes back where it came from. We can reuse it, clean it or fit new pulls you choose; new hardware is its own line on the estimate.
How do you protect my floors, counters and appliances?
We cover floors, counters and appliances with paper and plastic, mask the walls and keep a HEPA vacuum on the sanders. Doors are finished in the shop, away from your kitchen.
Can you help me choose a color?
Yes. Bring a swatch, a photo or the color of your counters, and we'll paint sample boards on the same primer so you see the color at your window, in your light.
What about odor, children and pets?
Doors cure away from your home, which keeps most of the odor in the shop. For the products themselves, ask for the product data sheet and your pediatrician or veterinarian; we don't make claims the label doesn't.
When would you tell me to replace instead?
When boxes are water-damaged or sagging, when thermofoil is failing, when you want a new layout, or when the doors are too far gone to hold a finish. We'd rather lose a job than paint a cabinet that won't last.
A question we haven't answered?
Call or send a note. Someone who does the work answers.
