The first question

Refinish, or replace?

Most kitchens that call us could go either way. Here is how the two compare, including the rows where replacing wins.

Refinish, or replace?
What mattersReplaceRefinish
CostReplaceNew boxes, counters and installation, priced for the whole kitchen.RefinishBetter: Priced by how many doors you have, and written after a walkthrough.
The kitchen out of useReplaceWeeks, with demolition, counters, plumbing and electrical.RefinishBetter: Doors are away about a week. Boxes are finished in place, so most days you keep a sink and a refrigerator.
Changing the layoutReplaceBetter: Move the sink, the island, a wall or the appliances.RefinishNone. We finish what's there, and a bigger change means a different job.
Damaged or swollen boxesReplaceBetter: New boxes throughout, with no old damage behind the doors.RefinishWe fill dings and small chips. Water-swollen or broken boxes need replacing, and we'll say so.
Storage and functionReplaceBetter: New drawers, pull-outs, deeper uppers and a layout drawn for how you cook.RefinishThe doors, drawers and shelves you have now; hinges and pulls can be updated.
How the finish wearsReplaceA factory finish, which also chips at edges and hinges over time.RefinishHard-wearing, with edges, hinges and the dishwasher side the places any painted cabinet wears first.

A kitchen, in order

Doors leave on day one and come back on a rack

A typical kitchen, in working days. Your written scope gives the range for yours.

  1. Before day 1

    Step 1: Walkthrough

We count doors and drawer fronts, test the finish, check the boxes and talk through color. You get a written scope and price.

  2. Day 1

    Step 2: Doors come off

Every door and drawer front is numbered, the hardware is bagged by cabinet, and the doors go to the shop.

  3. Days 1–3

Step 3: Prep, in two places

Doors are degreased, sanded and primed in the shop. In your kitchen we degrease, sand and fill the boxes under a HEPA vacuum.

  4. Days 3–6

    Step 4: Finish coats

Doors take two coats in the shop with time to dry between them. Boxes get theirs in place, with the floors covered.

  5. Days 6–8

    Step 5: Cure, then hang

Doors cure on racks before they come back. We rehang them, adjust each one and fit the hardware.

  6. Last day

    Step 6: Handover

We walk the kitchen with you, touch up what you point out and leave care instructions.

Kitchen sizes

How a kitchen is priced, by how many doors

What's included at each size. Your written price counts your doors and states the repairs.

  • Small kitchen

About 12 to 20 fronts. A galley or small U with a few uppers.

    • Doors and drawer fronts sprayed in the shop
    • Boxes finished in your kitchen
    • Primer and two finish coats
    • Hardware removed, labeled and refit
    • New pulls and hinges
  • Medium kitchen

About 20 to 35 fronts. An L or U with uppers on two or three walls.

    • Doors and drawer fronts sprayed in the shop
    • Boxes finished in your kitchen
    • Primer and two finish coats
    • Hardware removed, labeled and refit
    • New pulls and hinges
  • Large kitchen

35 fronts or more. An island, a pantry wall or a second run of cabinets.

    • Doors and drawer fronts sprayed in the shop
    • Boxes finished in your kitchen
    • Primer and two finish coats
    • Hardware removed, labeled and refit
    • New pulls and hinges

Repairs, a color change from dark to light and new hardware are priced on their own lines. Replacing a kitchen is a much bigger job; see the comparison above.

From kitchens we have done

What homeowners say

“I'd wanted my honey-oak cabinets gone for years and was quoted a new kitchen. Flavia counted the doors, and the refinish came to a small share of that.”

Marcy V.Kitchen cabinets, Carmel

“Our 1920s bungalow has bookcases on both sides of the fireplace. They matched the trim color from the next room and the shelves still sit level.”

Nick G.Built-ins, Fountain Square

“They told me my laminate doors couldn't be painted and quoted replacement doors instead. I appreciated that more than a bigger sale.”

Before you call

Quick answers about cabinet work

How long are my doors gone?

Doors and drawer fronts usually spend five to seven working days in our shop, and a whole kitchen takes one to two weeks from the day we start. Your written scope gives a range for your job, never a promised date.

Can I use my kitchen while you work?

Mostly. The boxes are finished in your kitchen, so on those days we ask you to stay out of the cabinets and the room's dust zone. Most households keep a working sink and refrigerator. We plan the days with you before we start.

What finish do you use, and how does it wear?

A cabinet-grade primer and two coats of a hard-wearing enamel, sprayed in the shop for doors and drawer fronts. Edges, hinges and the spot by the dishwasher are where any painted cabinet wears first. Ask for the product data sheet and we'll send it before you decide.

Will my oak grain show through the paint?

It can, and that's your choice. We can fill the grain so doors read smooth and modern, or leave it so the texture shows. We paint a sample board so you can see both before we commit.

My house was built before 1978. Does that change anything?

Yes. Federal rules from the EPA apply to paid work that disturbs paint in homes and child-occupied buildings built before 1978. The firm must hold the EPA's firm certification and follow its work practices. Our firm number is in the footer and on the About page, and you can ask to see it before work starts.

When would you tell me to replace instead?

When boxes are water-damaged or sagging, when thermofoil is failing, when you want a new layout, or when the doors are too far gone to hold a finish. We'd rather lose a job than paint a cabinet that won't last.
